Design Inspiration from Japan and Balloons Over New Zealand

Take a look at some of the latest ideas, products, and visuals for the week of June 17th brought to you by our strategists, designers, and developers.

Google Loon: Google’s ambitious new project — balloon-powered internet for everyone. Project Loon starts in June 2013 with an experimental pilot in New Zealand. A small group of Project Loon pioneers will test the technology in Christchurch and Canterbury.

Matternet: A start-up wants to leapfrog road infrastructure in developing countries by building a futuristic Pony Express—with drones.

Samsung to Give Away 1 Million Copies of Jay-Z’s New Album: The agreement signals the increasing importance of corporate sponsors to the music industry, which has seen sales tank over the past decade.

Scorekeeper XL: A simple scorekeeping app utilizing a minimal UI relatively similar to Clear. The app’s UI not only feels (and sounds) great, but also makes sense to use and works very naturally. It also includes a small easter egg: a musical keyboard that has been incorporated into the player-naming screen.

Gura Fiku: Design inspiration from Japan — an on-going blog dedicated to the history of Japanese graphic design. Lots of great Japanese design collected and shown here by Ryan Hageman, a graphic designer from Chicago who studied design and communication in Japan for a couple of years.
